Selling price = unit cost × (1 + markup/100). Negative markup from -100% to 0% models a below-cost sale; -100% makes the selling price zero. Profit/loss per unit = unit cost × markup/100. Quantity is a nonnegative whole number; zero quantity means no sales and zero totals, while per-unit values remain available. Profit margin divides unit profit/loss by selling price and is undefined at zero price. No taxes, shipping, fees or other expenses. Totals use unrounded per-unit values; money is displayed to cents.

What markup means in pricing

Markup is the amount you add to your cost to set a selling price. Businesses use it to cover overhead, protect profit, and keep pricing consistent across products or services.

A markup calculator is helpful when you want to price inventory quickly, test different pricing strategies, or make sure your quoted price leaves enough room after costs, fees, and operating expenses.

Markup vs. margin

Markup and profit margin are related, but they are not the same thing. Markup is based on cost, while margin is based on selling price. Confusing the two can lead to underpricing.

For example, if an item costs $50 and you apply a 40% markup, the selling price becomes $70. Your profit is $20, but the profit margin is $20 divided by $70, not 40%.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter your unit cost, service cost, or total job cost.
  2. Add the markup percentage you want to apply.
  3. Review the calculated selling price and markup amount.
  4. Compare the result against your target margin, market price, or quoting rules before finalizing your price.
